    Game of the Matchday

    Manchester City 2–4 PSG

A tale of two completely different halves.

You could make the case for PSG having the best team performance of the matchday in the first half as the likes of Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Vítinha and Achraf Hakimi completely tore City apart with so much ease.

But whatever Enzo Marseca said at halftime and the changes he made during the break clearly worked as it would be fair to say that even though the scoreline says City lost by 2 goals, they lost because of pure luck. Antoine Semenyo not being able to have a shot on target from many promising positions, Enzo Enzo Fernández and Erling Haaland hitting the woodwork, Nuno Mendes clearling a headed effort off the line, Matvey Safonov denying Haaland a hat-trick from close range.

All this resulted in a brilliantly absorbing match. The outcome could have been very different on another day. The big boys delivered.

    Biggest Surprise

    Viking 3–3 Bayern

Historical. Another 6-goal thriller, with this one taking place in Norway. Pulling off a 3-3 draw against the mighty German giants Bayern Munich in your first ever home Champions League match is quite a feat, let alone the fashion in which it happened.

Viking stunned Bayern very early in the 2nd minute from a Gianni Stensness header and only went on to double their surprising lead in the 38th minute in a fast break. Vincent Kompany made the necessary changes at the break and it suddenly looked like business as usual for Bayern as they came roaring back through a Harry Kane brace and a Luis Diaz goal in the 71st minute.

Just three minutes after that though, came probably the stupidest thing Michael Olise has done in his budding career as he got sent off for throwing the ball around. That eventually gave hope to the Norwegian side and they made it count in the end.

What is up with these sudden overperformances(?) from teams hailing from Norway in the Champions League?

    Best Team Performance

    Galatasaray 1–4 Barcelona

What a joy it is to watch Hansi Flick's Barcelona play their all-out attacking game. They did it once again in a rather tough atmosphere in Turkiye, outplaying Galatasaray in a commanding display of attacking brilliance.

Gala took a shock lead against the run of play but if you could ever feel an opening goal of a match, scored by the home team in a fierce atmosphere in the 28th minute is going to be a consolation, it was in this match.

A well rounded performance from Barca and you can see why they are among the few teams that have the "favourites" tag attached to them.

    Player of the Matchday

    Nicolò Tresoldi (Club Brugge)

In amongst the elites, amidst the chaos, a young German walked into San Siro and shushed the Italian crowd three times to take home the match ball in a stunning display. While it was a rather simple hat-trick, it must be said it is hard to do simple things in football and Nicolò Tresoldi expertly put away the chances with his quality positioning and anticipation.

In inspiring Club Brugge to a famous Champions League victory, Tresoldi became the first ever Brugge player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League, while also becoming the youngest German to score a hat-trick in the Champions League at 22 years and 54 days, taking that feat off of Karim Adeyemi, who was 22 years and 257 days at the time.

He even hit the crossbar before his first, could have had a poker!

Honorable mentions - Ross Barkley (Aston Villa), Jeremie Frimpong (Liverpool) & Lamine Yamal (Barcelona)

    Moment of the Matchday

Real Madrid flip the script in 7 minutes against Roma

Skip to 1:56 to watch the comeback here

This is what Real Madrid do, don't they? They somehow find a way. You are never safe.

Against Roma, they were down 3-1 till the 81st minute, and by the 90th minute it was 4-3 to them. 7 minutes, 4 shots, 3 kills, 1 crazy comeback.

Even crazier was the fact that all of these late 3 goals came from corners, that too from the ball ins from Arda Güler, who came on in the 59th minute to have an incredible impact.

    Late-Night Thoughts

The notable lack of surprise results and shocking moments in matchday 1 was fully made up for in matchday 2 of UCL. This matchday was so jam-packed I did not even get to discuss Arsenal's win against Lille or Atléti and United's tussle.

Do you realise how hard it was for me to leave out a 3-6 thriller between LASK and Liverpool or a 6-0 clinic from Aston Villa or another Bodø/Glimt giant-killing out of this write-up?

I was scratching my head during selection and was like a kid who went to the shop and had all his favourite candies in there but struggling to choose which one. May UCL football never end. It is literally PSG against Barcelona in matchday 3 and I believe this could have even more fireworks than City-PSG.
