Game of the Matchday
Brentford 1–2 Liverpool
Biggest Surprise
Tottenham 3–1 Coventry
Here is the surprise — out of all 20 Premier League teams, Tottenham were the last team to win a Premier League game, followed closely by Bournemouth and Fulham. Granted it took all three of them 7 matches to claim the 3 points but by the virtue of scheduling, Tottenham Hotspur were, in fact, the last team to do it.
After all the investment that was put in player recruitment during the summer transfer window and with quality of players the club has brought in, it is actually mind-blowing how it took them so long to win a game.
Best Team Performance
Brighton 5–0 Crystal Palace
Player of the Matchday
Erling Haaland (Manchester City)
Sometimes I feel like Erling Haaland is a victim of his brilliance and the ridiculous level at which he operates. He has started the season in a similar rapid fashion and he only extended that run of form against newcomers Ipswich.
Haaland scored a powerful header and a left-footed strike from a charging run to extend his goalscoring run to 8 consecutive games in which he has scored for Manchester City. Apart from his match-winning brace, he also created the joint-most chances (3), with 2 of them being big chances, while also generating an xGI (xG + xA) of 1.10.
What he is doing is frankly absurd and we should not normalize the insane output Haaland has in front of goal.
Honorable mentions - Luka Vušković (Brighton), Florian Wirtz (Liverpool) & Pedro Neto (Chelsea)
Moment of the Matchday
James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski back on the pitch
Oh how well it feels to see an old friend, let alone two. Forget about the clubs, as fans of the sport as a whole, these types of moments get me. It was a good day to be a football fan, and even better to be a Tottenham fan after so long.
First up to talk about is James Maddison who made his first competitive start for Spurs since May 2025, and opened the scoring in the 14th minute with an absolute beauty of a goal against his hometown club. A classic banger from perhaps one of the more underrated Premier League players over the last decade.
And then there was Dejan Kulusevski who was back in a Premier League matchday squad for the first time in 526 long days. Huge credit to Spurs fans who showered him with love every time they had the opportunity as he was welcomed back. He received the loudest of cheers when he got on the pitch, when he passed the ball, and when he got past a Coventry defender with space to run, it was lovely to hear as a football fan.
Here's hoping both of them stay fit and their injuries be a thing of the past.
