    Game of the Matchday

    Real Madrid 2–1 Inter

Two of the several top contenders to win the competition went toe-to-toe at the Bernabéu as Real Madrid hosted Inter in a thoroughly entertaining match. There were three goals scored in this match, Inter scored one, but only after gifting Madrid two goals in the first half.

The Mourinho Derby, if you will, was filled with chances aplenty for both sides, with the bout producing a whopping 13 big chances for either side combined. It took defensive errors, outstanding tackles, unbelievable saves and unbelievable misses to make and keep the score at 2-1. It may well have been a far bigger scoreline on another day.

    Biggest Surprise

    Real Madrid 2–1 Inter

Meanwhile, if you just flip the narrative, you would be surprised to see a contest featuring two sides containing heaps of quality miss the amount of big chances that they did. Yes, there were some brilliant preventative actions taken by both teams' defence, but at the highest level, it is all about the small margins that ultimately end up really mattering a lot.

Go and watch the highlights of this match and you'll end up scratching your head because of some of the chances that were missed, especially the ones from Jude Bellingham. Also, there was lack of proper surprises on matchday 1 in my opinion, so this one gets the nod.

    Best Team Performance

    PSG 6–1 Slovan Bratislava

Slovan Bratislava were no match for the defending champions as Paris Saint-Germain ran riot against the Slovakian side. There were many thumpings on matchday 1 but none were as brutal as PSG's. They have started their three-peat mission on fire.

I don't need to tell you much about this match as I believe the numbers do justice to the dominance the home side displayed. 72% possession, 35 shots taken, 61 touches in the opposition box, 8 big chances and an xG of 4.57 against Bratislava's 0.76, from which they scored a consolation goal to be fair, but make no mistake about it, this was not a contest by any means.

All this without, Marquinhos, João Neves, Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia!

    Player of the Matchday

    Ousmane Dembélé (PSG)

At the center of that massive thumping, arguably, was Ousmane Dembélé. And once again, the numbers tell the whole story.

The French forward created the most amount of chances for his teammates (6), with 3 of them being big chances, had 14 touches in the opposition box — the most — and took the most shots (10). Dembélé registered an enormous xGI (xG + xA) of 2.48, more than double of the any player below him. Electric.

Honorable mentions - Michael Olise (Bayern), Raphinha (Barcelona) & Lamine Yamal (Barcelona)

    Moment of the Matchday

Lens strike twice at the death against Slavia Prague

    Watch the comeback here

Agony for one side, ecstasy for another.

It looked like Slavia Prague were about to claim a very hard earned 3 points after they had gone down a man in the early stages of the 2nd half, by which the score was 0-0. Prague scored shortly after the dismissal, though Lens equalised within 20 minutes.

But when number 10 Danijel Šturm scored once again in the 88th minute, the stadium was bouncing. That joy was short-lived though as Slavia Prague conceded a late 90+1' equaliser and an even late 90+3' dagger to ultimately lose 2-3.

Football really plays with your emotions and changes it in a matter of minutes, for better or for worse.

    Late-Night Thoughts

The Champions League returns! And upon its return it delivered numerous entertaining bouts. Although there was a notable lack of surprise results as all the big boys won their matches except Inter, Atlético Madrid and Napoli maybe, and even then that was because those teams played against Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal respectively.

There is so much optimism during the early stages of this competition, you love to see it. And it only gets better with some spicy matchups next matchday, none more so than Man City hosting back-to-back UCL champs PSG.
