        Barcelona 7–2 Newcastle

        The Game of the Matchday belonged to the Camp Nou where Barcelona absolutely tore apart Newcastle in a 7-2 demolition. After a cagey 1-1 in the first leg, many expected the Magpies to sit deep and frustrate, but Barcelona had other plans entirely. While teams are usually more cautious in a second leg, caution was thrown out the window as Hansi Flick’s side hit seven past a stunned Newcastle defense. Even when Anthony Elanga clawed back two goals in the first half to keep things interesting, Barca never took their foot off the gas. The night highlighted both the undeniable and unreliable sides of this team. They were devastating in attack yet conceded twice, but when you score seven goals, nobody really cares about a clean sheet. Newcastle failed to replicate their first-half success after the break when they had exploited Barca's high defensive line with the pace of Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, and Anthony Elanga. With 30 goals in the competition so far, Flick’s philosophy is simple. He just wants to outscore the opponent. And for fans that means high potential for blockbuster matches.

        Biggest Surprise

        Chelsea 0–3 PSG

        Chelsea fans arrived at the Bridge clinging to the hope that the 5-2 first-leg deficit was an unfair reflection of their performance. That optimism lasted exactly six minutes before 1st leg hero Khvicha Kvaratskhelia stepped up to silence the home crowd yet again. PSG dismantled the Blues with clinical ease and the spirited fight of the first leg was now a distant memory. Liam Rosenior’s side looked completely outclassed from the get-go, handing over the momentum and failing to convert either of just the two big chances they managed to create over the ninety minutes. For a club with the financial backing and resources of Chelsea, being dumped out 8-2 on aggregate is a proper humiliation. Revenge for the Club World Cup secured in the most dominant fashion possible.

        Best Team Performance

        Liverpool 4–0 Galatasaray

        Liverpool entered this fixture stumbling through a run of just two wins in five games, including a frustrating 1st leg 1-0 loss in Turkiye. Arne Slot needed to remind the world of Liverpool’s true identity, and a Champions League night at Anfield provided the perfect stage for a performance of pure authority. The Reds looked composed and in total control from the first whistle, suffocating the visitors with a high press that yielded 32 shots and a staggering 4.88 xG. While Galatasaray managed only one shot on target, Liverpool created nine big chances in a display of absolute dominance. Even after Mo Salah missed a high-pressure penalty in first-half stoppage time, he refused to let that define his night. Instead, he and his teammates emerged for the second half to unleash an 11-minute blizzard, with Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch scoring in quick succession to flip the tie on its head. The final flourish came when Salah linked up with Florian Wirtz for a slick one-two before hitting a classic curler from outside the box. This marked the first time since the legendary 2019 turnaround against Barcelona that Liverpool successfully overturned a first-leg deficit in this competition, giving Slot exactly the kind of statement victory he needed.

        Raphinha (Barcelona)

        Raphinha finally announced himself on the Champions League stage this season with a performance that is hard to replicate even in a video game. By playing a hand in six of Barcelona's seven goals against Newcastle, he was the undisputed Player of the Matchday. The Brazilian delivered a masterclass of physical and technical skill, opening the scoring in the sixth minute before assisting the assist for Marc Bernal’s goal and winning the penalty that Lamine Yamal converted. He then set up Fermin Lopez and Robert Lewandowski with pinpoint precision before eventually capping off his night with a second goal, leaving Kieran Trippier with enough nightmare fuel to last for weeks. He created three big chances and maintained an infectious energy that had the entire stadium roaring every time he touched the ball or led the press. When he is fit and firing, he can compete against anyone on the planet.

        Moment of the Matchday

        Bernardo Silva's last UCL match with Manchester City ends with an early red card against Real Madrid

        Look away Manchester City fans. Hoping to turn around a mammoth 3-goal deficit against the mighty Madrid, the Cityzens started very brightly. The atmosphere was electric and the Etihad believed. But that belief lasted just about 19 minutes, as the tie was effectively murdered. Club legend Bernardo Silva blocked a Vinicius Jr. shot on goal with his elbow, and after a grueling VAR review, the ref showed a straight red card and awarded the penalty. Vinicius stepped up and absolutely lashed it home, carrying the weight of the Madrid badge on his back and extinguishing any hope of a City comeback. A very sour moment for City fans to digest, it was a catastrophic error from one of City's most senior players that left Pep Guardiola stunned on the touchline. One thing's for sure, Bernardo Silva is always box-office against Real Madrid, one way or the other.

        Late-Night Thoughts 

        This matchday had so much. A little bit of everything. Sporting ended the Bodø/Glimt fairytale, continuing their own with a tremendous 5-0 comeback victory. Arsenal and Bayern with routine victories. PSG and Real Madrid knocking out Chelsea and Man City in embarrassing ways. Barcelona and Liverpool with goal-fests. And Tottenham Hotspur won a game of football. Perhaps I should have picked that for Biggest Suprise. 8 teams, 4 match-ups and all 4 with interesting narratives. Atleti and Barca in an all-Spanish affair which will means they will face each other 3 times in under 2 weeks in all competitions. Liverpool have the chance to get revenge on the agony of last season against PSG. Arsenal's resolute defence is up against the free flowing Sporting, with of course the Viktor Gyokeres spice. And then the heavyweight clash — Real Madrid taking on Bayern Munich. So much to look forward to!
