    Game of the Matchday

    Benfica 4–2 Real Madrid

    This match was filled with narratives and moments. Jose Mourinho vs. Real Madrid. Red cards. Qualification. Elimination. And one of the wildest finales. The match at the Estadio da Luz lived up to every bit of the hype. Madrid arrived sitting comfortably in 3rd place and looked solid early on, especially with Kylian Mbappe finding the net. However, Benfica turned the stadium into a furnace and refused to let them settle. Andreas Schjelderup was the star of the show, tearing the Madrid flanks apart and bagging a massive brace that shifted the momentum entirely along with more help from Vangelis Pavlidis. Mbappe again tried to rescue the Galacticos by scoring another goal to make it 3–2 heading onto the final moments of the game. Both Raul Asencio and Rodrygo lost their head and were sent off in a chaotic stoppage time. And it all ended in the most dramatic way possible, as Anatoliy Trubin scored a header to make sure Benfica live to fight another day.

    Biggest Surprise

    Atletico Madrid 1–2 Bodø/Glimt

    Take a bow Bodø/Glimt! Taking three points at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano is already hard enough, but doing it the way Bodø/Glimt did is shocking. Alexander Sorloth scored early against the team coming from his own country, and usually, that is the part of the script where Atleti shuts the door and grinds out a win. Instead, the Norwegian side played with fearlessness, dreaming of qualification to the play-offs. Atleti finished with 27 shots, but they couldn't break the Bodo resolve after Fredrik Sjovold’s equalizer shifted the energy of the match. Kasper Hogh’s winner in the 59th minute secured a 2–1 victory that silenced one of the most intimidating crowds in Europe, a scoreline that left Diego Simeone looking baffled on the touchline. This result locked in 23rd place for Bodo, keeping their fairy-tale run alive while forcing Atletico into a much harder playoff path. All of a sudden Bodø/Glimt are giant-killers.

    Best Team Performance

    Liverpool 6–0 Qarabag

    Liverpool ended their league phase by dismantling Qarabag in a performance that was quite the statement. Anfield witnessed 38 total shots as the Reds cruised to a 6–0 win to secure a 3rd-place finish and avoid the playoff headache. Alexis Mac Allister ran the midfield, bagging two goals and dictating the entire tempo from start to finish. Even with Jeremie Frimpong picking up an injury four minutes in, the attack never slowed down, with Mo Salah and Florian Wirtz both getting on the scoresheet. The standout moment of the night belonged to Virgil van Dijk, who became the first center-back in UCL history to record a hat-trick of assists in a single game. It was a terrifying display of quality that reestablishes them as one of the favorites heading into the knockouts. A performance so dominant, even Federico Chiesa joined in on the fun at the end by scoring his first UCL goal for the Reds.

    Player of the Matchday

    Lamine Yamal (Barcelona)

    Barcelona were in real trouble at halftime, sitting 13th in the live table after Copenhagen took a shock early lead. And then their starboy took it up to himself to turn the tie around. Lamine Yamal essentially dragged them into the top eight during a dominant second-half display. The 18-year-old – yes, he is still just 18 – was everywhere in the 4–1 win, providing a perfectly weighted assist for Robert Lewandowski to level the game. That assist was his 8th in the competition, breaking the record for the most UCL assists by a teenager. He followed it up by scoring a goal of his own and creating five clear-cut chances, showing a level of maturity that is frankly ridiculous for his age. By the time the final whistle blew, Yamal had ensured Barca finished 5th, heading straight to the Round of 16. It was about time he showed up in this section!

    Moment of the Matchday

    Benfica's goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin saves them by scoring at the death

    Anatoliy Trubin produced perhaps the most unbelievable moment of the season in the 98th minute, with Benfica leading Real Madrid 3–2 and every other match already finished. Madrid needed one goal to secure a top-eight finish and direct qualification to the Round of 16, while Benfica required another to stay alive in the competition. Down to nine men, with Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe staying high for a potential counter, Jose Mourinho signalled for his goalkeeper to go forward in one last gamble. Fredrik Aursnes delivered the cross, and Benfica took the numbers advantage as Trubin powered a header past Thibaut Courtois to make it 4–2, the exact margin Benfica needed to leapfrog Marseille into 24th, saving their European season, knocking Real Madrid out of the top eight, and as fate would have it,  setting up a dramatic playoff rematch between the two sides. Nights like these always seem to find the Special One.

    Late-Night Thoughts 

    What did we just witness!? One of the all time Champions League moments. I think we all should accept that the new format has been a hit. It has the capability to produce mad moments like this, taking away European football away for the rest of the season from several usual contenders like Napoli and Marseille and giving them to underdogs like Bodø/Glimt and Qarabag, while also dragging the current Champions League champions PSG and the Kings of Champions League Real Madrid to the play-off round. What a night!
